PopCorners

The New Shape of Popcorn by Medora Snacks
If you haven’t tried PopCorners, you are missing out something really fun & tasty. So far I have tried four flavors, Kettle, Cheesy Jalapeño, White Cheddar, and Butter. So, my review is limited to these four flavors, though there are more varieties.
The following pictures show what’s inside the 1.1 oz bag, and the look of Cheesy Jalapeño in comparison with Kettle.
So Beautiful & Flavorful! Yum!!
PopCorners has a unique texture. It is crunchy, yet soft. It’s like Popcorn in a Chip without hull, so nothing gets stuck between your teeth. 🙂
How about the nutrition factor? Let’s check it out!
We will go over the nutrition label and the ingredient list of each flavor, with a little bit of additional explanations on some of the not-so-obvious ingredient names.
All PopCorners are claimed to be “gluten free” and contain “0 grams of trans fat.”
KETTLE – Sweet & Salty
INGREDIENTS
1. Enriched Yellow Corn: Yellow Corn, Niacin (= Vitamin B3), Iron, Thiamine Mononitrate (= a nitrate salt form of Vitamin B1), Riboflavin (= Vitamin B2), Folic Acid (= Vitamin B9)
2. Sunflower Oil
3. Sugar
4. Sea Salt
The Kettle flavored PopCorners tastes mildly sweet & salty at the same time. One 1.1oz bag of the Kettle flavored PopCorners has 140 calories (35 from Fat) and relatively low amounts of salts (110mg) and sugars (3g).
Note that the Kettle flavored PopCorners may contain “Soy” ingredients. Overall, it is a relatively healthy snack with simple ingredients (none of the bad stuff), especially a great snack for children and adults who have sweet teeth.
CHEESY JALAPEÑO – Hot & Cheesy
INGREDIENTS
1. Enriched Yellow Corn: Yellow Corn, Niacin (= Vitamin B3), Iron, Thiamine Mononitrate (= a nitrate salt form of Vitamin B1), Riboflavin (= Vitamin B2), Folic Acid (= Vitamin B9)
2. Canola Oil
3. Extra Virgin Olive Oil
4. Jalapeno Peppers
5. Natural Cheddar Cheese Flavor: Whey (= Milk serum), Reduced Lactose Whey (= obtained by the selective removal of lactose from whey), Maltodextrin (= a polysaccharide, an artificial sugar that is derived from starch such as corn or wheat), Cheddar and Blue Cheese (Cultured Milk, Salt, and enzymes), Canola Oil, Salt, Disodium Phosphate (= a food additive for preservation, pH stabilization, emulsification and/or phosphate fortification), Citric Acid (= a natural preservative), Lactic Acid (= a food preservative, curing agent, and/or flavoring agent).
6. Jalapeno Spice: Parsley Flakes, Dextrose (= a natural sugar that is derived from starches such as corn, wheat or rice), Jalapeno Pepper Powder, Onion Powder, Garlic Powder, Spices and Natural Flavors
The Cheesy Jalapeño flavored PopCorners tastes cheesy & hot, as the name implies, but not overpowering. Some who love extremely hot flavors may find it not so hot or not salty enough. But there is definitely a kick of Jalapeño, and most will find it spicy enough and just taste wonderful, I bet. Thanks to the added flavors, this version has a longer ingredient list and higher calories than Kettle. One 1.1oz bag of Cheesy Jalapeño has 150 calories (50 from Fat), yet relatively low amounts of salts (135mg) and sugars (1g).
Note that the Cheesy Jalapeño flavored PopCorners contains “Dairy” ingredients and may contain “Soy” Ingredients. Overall, it is a great snack for adults who adore a spicy Jalapeño flavor.
WHITE CHEDDAR – Perfect Cheesiness!
INGREDIENTS
1. Enriched Yellow Corn: Yellow Corn, Niacin (= Vitamin B3), Iron, Thiamine Mononitrate (= a nitrate salt form of Vitamin B1)
2. Cheddar Cheese Flavor: Whey, Reduced Lactose Whey (= obtained by the selective removal of lactose from whey), Maltodextrin (= a polysaccharide, an artificial sugar that is derived from starch such as corn or wheat), Cheddar and Blue Cheeses (cultured milk, salt, and enzymes), Canola oil, Salt, Disodium Phosphate (= a food additive for preservation, pH stabilization, emulsification and/or phosphate fortification), Citric Acid (= a natural preservative), Lactic Acid (= a food preservative, curing agent, and/or flavoring agent).
The white cheddar flavored PopCorners tastes cheesy but not overpowering or salty at all. You can’t go wrong with this flavor. Yum! One 1.1oz bag of White Cheddar has 140 calories (50 from Fat), yet relatively low amounts of salts (135mg) and sugars (1g).
Note that the white cheddar flavored PopCorners contains “Dairy” ingredients and may contain “Soy” Ingredients. Overall, it is a great snack for almost everybody, especially for anyone who loves mild cheddar cheese flavor.
BUTTER – Oh my, Salty!
INGREDIENTS:
1. Enriched Yellow Corn: Yellow Corn, Niacin (= Vitamin B3), Iron, Thiamine Mononitrate (= a nitrate salt form of Vitamin B1), Riboflavin (= Vitamin B2), Folic Acid (= Vitamin B9)
2. Sunflower Oil
3. Natural Butter Flavor: Whey Solids, Enzyme-Modified Butter (a processed butter via lipase, a strong butter flavor enhancer), Maltodextrin (= a polysaccharide, an artificial sugar that is derived from starch such as corn or wheat), Salt, Dehydrated Butter, Guar Gum (a fiber from the seed of the guar plant; a thickening, stabilizing, and binding agent), Annatto (a ‘yellow to orange’ food coloring agent, derived from the seeds of the achiote trees), Turmeric
4. Sea Salt
The butter flavored PopCorners tastes very salty. Perhaps it has a nice butter flavor (?), but the strong saltiness masks all flavors. What a disappointment! Unless you fond really salty foods, don’t buy the Butter! One 1.1oz bag of Butter has 140 calories (35 from Fat) and a relatively low amount of sugars (1g), but it has a lot of salts (310mg), which is 13% of Daily Value: Other three flavors reviewed above have 110-135mg of salts, which are 5-6% DV.
Note that the Butter flavored PopCorners contains “Dairy” ingredient and may contain “Soy” Ingredients. Overall, I would NOT recommend the butter flavored PopCorners to anyone because of its poor taste profile and high amount of salts.
Overall, PopCorners is a gluten-free low-fat healthy alternative snack, and tastes wonderful with great flavors (except the Butter). It is not a nutritious food, but a perfect fun food that offers great taste, less guilt.
Where to Buy: You can buy PopCorners from the official company website http://www.popcorners.com but their price may not be the best. I usually buy these at Amazon as a bulk (40 1.1oz bags per box) using its Subscribe & Save program for the best price, or individually (5oz bags) at T.J. Maxx or Marshalls. Some local groceries may carry PopCorners, depending on where you live, and you can also find them at the Wal-Mart website.
The following star ratings are based on three flavors, i.e., Kettle, Cheesy Jalapeño, and White Cheddar.
